Deconstructing Cravings The body is an amazing source of intelligence. It is always there for you, pumping blood, never skipping a heartbeat, digesting whatever food you put in it and maintaining homeostasis. Is this reliable, intelligent bio-computer making a mistake by craving ice cream or a hamburger or chocolate? Are cravings due to lack of will-power or discipline? I’d like to suggest that cravings are not a problem. They are critical pieces of information that tell you what your body needs. The important thing is to understand why you crave what you crave. Perhaps your diet is too restrictive or devoid of essential nutrients. Perhaps you are living a lifestyle that is too boring or stressful. Your body tries to correct the imbalance by sending you a message: a craving. A craving for something sweet could mean you need more protein, more exercise, more water or more love in your life. The key to stopping the sugar craving is to understand and deliver what your body really needs. No book or theory can tell you what to eat. Only awareness of your body and its needs can tell you. Of all the relationships in our lives, the one with our body is the most essential. It takes communication, love and time to cultivate a relationship with your body. As you learn to decipher and respond to your body’s cravings, you will create a deep and lasting level of health and balance. The next time you have a craving, treat it as a loving message from your body instead of a weakness. Try these tips to respond to your body: Have a glass of water and wait 10 minutes. Eat a healthier version of what you crave. For example, if you crave sweets, try eating more fruit and sweet or root vegetables. What is out of balance in your life? Is there something you need to express, or is something being repressed? What happened in your life just before you had this craving? When you eat the food you are craving, enjoy it, taste it, savor it; notice its effect. Then you will become more aware and free to decide if you really want it next time.

Reflections on Smoking in the Workplace Last week I wrote a post about smoking at work and looked at the productivity of smokers versus non-smokers over the course of a work day. The results are inconclusive as to whether smokers actually take more breaks at work or if they are any less productive even if they do take more work breaks than non-smokers.When I was researching the story, I started thinking about what work life was like for smokers before smoking was banned from public places.As a kid, I remember visiting my dad at work.   He had an ash tray the size of Texas on his desk and it was always full. Smoking was part of his regular work dayit was as automatic aswell, breathing.   He never took breakshe didnt have to. He could just light up whenever he felt like it. He plowed through his day, cigarette after cigarette. He had a high stress job and smoking kept him calm and kept him focused. He might have actually been more productive at work because   of his smoking.But what if he hadnt had that option and had worked during a time when smoking was banned from office buildings? I wonder if he would have been leaving the building every 20 minutes to smoke or just smoking less because it was too much of a hassle or too unproductive to stop what he was doing. Would he have re-examined his choices and his habit because of the disruption caused by smoking? Would he have maybe, just once, entertained the thought of quitting?My dad worked hard so he could get to where he wanted to be financially so he could retire early. He achieved that goal. And soon after he retired, he stopped smokingbecause he had to. He was diagnosed with emphysema and COPD.My dad spent most of his retirement years very ill and he passed away last month. I think his ability to smoke at work made him productive but I would have been happy to see him forfeit a   few raises in exchange for a few more years to live.

How to settle into a new job fast Congratulations! Youve accepted a new job offer and youre about to start the job you really wanted. On one hand youre excited, but on the other hand, you might be feeling a bit apprehensive. Will you fit in? Will people like you? Will you be able to do the job? In my job of managing recruitment for Expedia brand in Europe and running an interview coaching practice, I deal with new starters on a weekly basis. Here is some advice for anyone stepping into a new role: Do: o                    Find out more about your new company  before you start. What are their goals and mission, who are the key staff members? Doing a bit of research before you start will be a confidence boost and itll shorten your learning curve. A candidate whos accepted a new job offer as a Software Development Engineer at Expedia recently has asked me to find out what technologies she should brush up on/learn about before starting. This shows initiative and its impressed the hiring manager. o                    Make sure you are clear on expectations.  This is very important especially if you havent seen a full job description (If you dont already have one, ask for it!) You need to know your key priorities and understand how your performance will be measured. The first few weeks in a new role is also a great time to ask questions. So make sure you ask them now, not 6 months later when people will expect you to know things. o                    Be aware of your appearance and attitude,  as this is what people will notice first. Check what the companys dress code is, and above all, make sure you are polite, courteous and a good listener. o                  Find out how your boss likes to communicate.  Is it email, memos, face to face meetings? o                  Take time to get to know people.  As a newbie you have no preconceived notions or ideas.   So allow time to get to know everyone, make up your own mind instead of listening to the this is what they are like stories from other people. Dont: o                    Be late.  Especially in the beginning as you dont want the employer to lose confidence in you before you start. o                    Keep saying how you used to do things in your last job. Just because things were done a certain way in your last job doesnt mean it is the right or only way. The mistake Ive seen even senior leaders make is trying to impose ideas/solutions without learning enough about the problems first.   If you are open to learning, you might actually see the benefits of trying out the ways in which your new company operates. o                   Criticise your new or former employers or colleagues. I recently had someone rejected after an initial phone interview as they kept criticizing their current employer. This will not win you any new best friends. o                    Get ahead of yourself.  It is good to be ambitious but if you are employed in a junior role, you should not be striving to become the VP within the first month. Ask questions and learn in the first few weeks and only offer your suggestions at suitable times or when prompted. I remember when I started to work for a new client a few years ago. A consultant who joined our team had lots of suggestions of what to change on his  first  day but he hasnt even bothered to talk to the team to find out more about how they operate, what the challenges and opportunities are. Needless to say, he alienated everyone and did not last in this job for a very long time Starting a new job can be daunting, but your Manager and colleagues will understand that it takes a while to settle into the new job role and some people adapt faster than others. Be you, be calm, listen, be open, be aware all new experiences, take time to learn.  Before you know it, youll feel confident and part of the team and youll be set up for a successful career in your new organization.
